Something Below the Surface

Last fall, my two sons and I planted an eastern redbud and a dogwood tree in my backyard. We had a great time digging the holes together. Both of my boys helped out; each with their own small hand shovel. These small trees looked great in their new location, that is until all their leaves fell off much earlier than any other tree in our neighborhood.

Searching Google, I found out that could mean that they were diseased, they were sick, they needed to be replanted, or they were perfectly fine just getting used to their new environment. It wouldn’t be until spring when I would know for sure. Since then, we have been eagerly waiting these last few weeks to see if any buds would grow on either tree.

Lo and behold, the dogwood has almost microscopic leaves starting to grow. The eastern redbud has small pink blossoms, which will at some point turn into leaves. I think I can safely say that despite my lack of gardening skills, these little trees survived the winter and will have a fruitful spring.

As I have thought about this, all winter long, something was taking place below the surface. They were developing the strength to make it through winter, blossom in spring, and thrive all summer long.

There is always something going on below the surface, even in you and me.

It might be grief, anxiety, shame, or fear. It could be joy, hope, dreams, and excitement. We are ever-changing and evolving, growing and maturing, dying and becoming made new. And through it all, life always finds a way.

As spring (finally) blooms around us, take some time to relish the beauty around you. Try to truly see something you may not have ever noticed. Notice the blossoming of new leaves and flowers bursting forth with color. Be reminded that what is going on below the surface, deep within your soul even, is bringing a life in which you will truly flourish.
