Reflection

So, this has been a hard week for our campus—and that is an understatement. Nick Johnson’s death plunged a large part of our community into a crisis we didn’t see coming. Some of us had a very personal connection with Nick, as friends, club lacrosse teammates, or hall-mates in McWane. Some had classes with Nick or shared meals with him. Others may not have known Nick, but no one on a college campus escapes the tragedy of the death of one so young. Please keep Nick’s parents, his younger sisters and brothers in your prayers. They need our thoughts and stories more than anything.

Our community is small enough to be tight-knit, and in case you don’t know it, LC is a very special place.  There is a level of care for each other here – a level of engagement as a community that is special at LC. We are family. Sure we have our spats and struggles, but in times of crisis we pull together. I smiled Monday when I realized how easy it was to represent LC to the Johnson family because everything I said about LC and the promise of support I offered them was true—we will miss him, we will do everything we can to assist them, and everyone involved wants to ease their pain. We have strong leadership at Lynchburg College, but the truth is that effective leaders rely heavily on their colleagues and MUST count on others to care and be effective. It’s nice that we can trust each other to care.

In closing I wanted to remind you that I care for you and your struggles too. I pray at least daily for students, faculty, and staff. I also wanted to say that I am thankful for you and thankful that LC is my community. I am thankful for you as individuals and for what we are together.

Blessings,
Stephanie
