Equinox!

On Monday, March 20, 2023 at 5:24 p.m. EDT (21:24 UTC), the sun will cross the equator heading north, signaling the start of spring in the northern hemisphere and fall in the southern hemisphere.

Really?

The sun only APPEARS to move from our perspective, of course. In fact, it is Earth’s motion around the sun, and our reaching a particular point in our yearly orbit, that makes the sun appear to travel between the Tropic of Cancer in the north and the Tropic of Capricorn in the south. Earth’s tilt is relative to the distant stars, not to the sun.

In Lynchburg, Virginia on March 20, there will be 12 hours and 8 minutes of daylight, growing ever longer as we move toward the June solstice on June 21. On that day we will have 14 hours and 45 minutes of daylight in Lynchburg. Let’s hope it isn’t raining!
